Colombian wife tours
Colombian women are known for being good wives and for being physically beautiful (by "good" I mean obedient, of course). It is no surprise that there is what is known as "Colombian Wife Tours"... groups of American men than sign up to travel to Colombia and get introduced to hundreds of women that are looking for a husband and a way out of poverty. That's right, the women that sign up to be introduced to American men are not exactly the cream of the crop in Colombia, they are not the social "well-to-do"; they aren't dirt poor either. Mostly they are women form mid-sized cities (Buga, Tulua, Sincelejo, Santa Marta) in their twenties and thirties that have have grown up in decent families but have little or no opportunities to grow out of their current situation. They are not exactly looking for love; my guess is that they will settle for a " good man" (Colombian men have a reputation for being promiscuous). They are looking for a ticket out of their boring lives. They will be happy to travel to the US and be housewives and have children, something that American women sometimes run away from. The fact that women come from humble origins and have little expectations of the men they are about to meet does not discourage the lonely American men from signing up and paying hundreds of dollars to get the chance to meet women. It's a win-win situation. The men are probably in their thirties and forties and are not exactly Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Many of them are overweight but have well-paying jobs and live in nice US cities. All they want is somebody to call a wife so they can have children and fit in with the rest of the guys at the office. They are loyal and respectful to their women. They are just happy to have someone by their side and grow old with. Once a year or so they are 'obligated' to travel to Colombia with the wife to visit the in-laws. That is not so fun as most of these girls are not from Bogota, Medellin, Cali or Barranquilla; that means that getting there takes longer and the stay is probably not as comfortable. It's a small price to pay for year-round companionship, cooking, housekeeping and birth giving. How much would a maid charge for all that work?! Sure, some would call these Colombian wives "glorified maids", but the industry that has grown thanks to this phenomenon is impressive and provides a very valuable service to both men and women. |
