El cartel on Caracol Colombia The Colombian television series El cartel, based on the book El cartel de los sapos (The cartel of the snitches) by 'former' drug trafficker Andres Lopez, is a tell-all tale of the lives of all the men who were part of the Cali and North valley drug cartels in Colombia in the mid to late nineties. The series debuted in Colombian television in May 2008 and has been a runaway hit since; it is scheduled to end in September 2008. The main storyline in El cartel details how some of the most powerful post-Escobar drug lords rose to power and how they finally met their demise in part through internal disputes amongst them. El cartel was shot in Bogota, Cali, Armenia, Miami and Mexico City and includes and all-star lineup of Colombian actors such as Manolo Cardona, Diego Cadavid and Robinson Diaz. The name of the book refers to how some, including the author, were able to negotiate with the DEA by providing cooperation. Andres Lopez has now served his sentence and lives comfortably in his apartment in Brickell Avenue in Miami.
