The rescue of Ingrid Betancourt
Some have questioned the veracity and authenticity of the military operation that resulted in the liberation of former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, 3 Americans and 11 Colombian police and military personnel. Critics say the Colombian government paid $20 million to Farc and the events of July 2nd were just the willful liberation by the leftist guerrilla movement. There is actually no evidence of this whatsoever and it is extremely unlikely that Farc would sell their crown jewel (Betancourt) for cash and lose all bargaining power with the legitimate and democratically elected Colombian government led by President Alvaro Uribe. As it stands now, Farc's hostages are not as politically valuable as they were before Operation Check. Some politicians, some polica and soldiers, and quite a few civilians. Needless to say all are human beings and all deserve to be free, but from the perspective of the Farc criminals, a handful of humble policemen are simply not a strong bargaining chip. Sad but true. The Colombian government has presented guerrillas on a silver platter the possibility of coming back to lawful civilian life. Somewhat of an amnesty. They, however, insist that they need a few thousand square kilometers cleared by the military in order to talk about peace. Sure, some details of the operation may have been left out for security reasons but the reality is that the hostages were taken from their captors without bloodshed. The operation was impeccable in its planning and execution |
